947’s Christmas Wish helps Jamie get to USA in 2015
The 947 Breakfast Xpress team today helped to make Jamie Williams’ dream come true through the radio station’s annual Christmas Wish.
GLENVISTA – Jamie is a 14-year-old, straight A student at Glenvista High School who has been selected to attend an Academic Achievers Tour to the USA in 2015.
It is a huge accolade for Jamie to be chosen and the tour is an opportunity to nurture and develop this bright young woman. Unfortunately the cost of the tour needs to be paid by the individuals, and Jamie’s mom Jenny is simply not in a position to cover the fees.
Breakfast Xpress host, Darren Simpson was elated to help Jamie. He said, “Jamie’s academic achievements have proven that she deserves this incredible experience.”
In a letter submitted by her sister Jessica, she wrote, “Please can you help. My mom really doesn’t have the money, she has been battling financially for a long time now and can’t even afford to pay her school fees, my mom even applied for exemption based on Jamie’s outstanding grades, as they just cannot afford her school fees.”
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Jamie and I know that she will do anything it takes to go on this tour,” she wrote.
According to Jamie’s teacher, Jadene Shrimpton, she excels in everything she does and is not only academically inclined. Jamie is also an avid sportswoman.
On Monday, December 1 on the Breakfast Xpress Piet van Vuuren, Inland Promotions and Advertising Manager at Spar, stepped in to assist. Spar retailers will sponsor R50 000 to cover Jamie’s Academic Achievers Tour to the USA. This will cover the cost of the tour (R40 000) plus visa costs and spending money.
Piet has also given the family an additional R10 000 Spar shopping vouchers for Christmas.
Along with 70 like-minded students, Jamie will attend private lectures at MIT, Harvard, Yale University and Columbia University covering an array of globally significant topics; mixed in with visits to world renowned sites and museums.
