Preventative measures for distemper
Johannesburg SPCA has experienced a dramatic increase in the number of Canine Distemper Cases admitted into their hospital over the past weeks.
REUVEN – Distemper is a serious and highly contagious viral disease that can affect the respiratory, gastrointestinal and even nervous systems of dogs and puppies. The virus is transmitted through respiratory secretions. Dogs with distemper often cough and the virus is then made “airborne” affecting other dogs which have not been vaccinated.
There is no cure for distemper! But you can take preventative measures to help your best friend build up his/her immunity against the virus and other potentially fatal diseases.
Puppies need a minimum of three vaccinations from the age of six to eight weeks, a month apart and thereafter adult dogs need vaccinations annually. Regular vaccinations must be maintained throughout your pet’s life. It is important to remember that one set of vaccinations is not enough to keep them protected from diseases like distemper.
Keeping up-to-date on all your pet’s vaccinations is vital for your pet’s health and happiness.
To help you help your animal, JSPCA is offering vaccinations for all dogs and puppies at a small fee of R50 per vaccination during the festive season.
