Three suspects caught by fluke in Bassonia

On Monday afternoon, September 21, three suspects were arrested by the Johannesburg Flying Squad on the corner of Pieter Ackroyd Avenue and Comaro Street, Bassonia.

BASSONIA – The suspects had gone through a red traffic light and the members of Johannesburg Flying Squad pulled them over for not stopping at the red light, with intentions of giving them a traffic fine ticket.

“It was a complete fluke they were ever arrested. When the police officers approached the blue VW Polo they saw the ignition had been tampered with and asked the men to step out of the vehicle. All three willingly climbed out of the car,” said Warrant Officer Lorraine van Emmerik, Communication Official, Booysens SAPS.

On further inspection of the vehicle a 9ml hand pistol and an AK47 were discovered under the seat. The vehicle was positively identified as having been stolen in Boksburg.

One man at the scene said he thought he recognised one of the suspect’s. “He looks familiar and I’m sure I’ve spotted him walking around Bassonia,” he said. Van Emmerik said Mondeor SAPS would check his and the other two suspects’ fingerprints to see if there was a match with others they had at the police station.

The suspects were arrested and will appear in court in due course.
