Here we go again

This is the ninth burst since late last November

RESIDENTS in and around Maluti Street, Winchester Hills, have had enough as they once again found themselves without water on Friday night and Saturday morning, 13 February, after the water pipe in Maluti Street burst again.

This is the ninth burst since late last November, and as a resident said, “We appreciate Joburg Water for fixing the burst every time, but this is now way beyond a joke! We never know if we’ll be without water and can’t plan our lives at all. Again this morning we woke up to no water and not being able to bath, have coffee and so on.”

Michelle Pelser, CPF Mondeor Sector 2 member, said, “My husband reported the burst on Saturday morning at 04:45 to Joburg Water. Many other residents also reported it.”

A team was sent out on Saturday from Joburg Water and once more the road was dug up to fix the leak. “The road has more patches than a patchwork quilt,” one resident said.

As drought-stricken areas continue without water, thousands of litres of water are going to waste in Winchester Hills.

Eleanor Mavimbela, external communications officer at the SRC department said, “We are aware that there have been a few pipe burst repairs performed on this line in Maluti Street, Winchester Hills. The reason for the burst pipes is that there is an old asbestos cement line which needs to be replaced. Johannesburg Water is in the process of making necessary plans in order to replace the old line.”
