Hijacking ends in death of suspect

A suspected hijacker was shot dead by a JMPD officer.

A SUSPECTED hijacker was shot and killed following a hijacking on the corner of Phillip and Violet Streets, in Rosettenville, on Friday, January 27.

According to the JMPD and Moffatview SAPS spokespersons, Chief Supt Wayne Minnaar and Const Rebecca Bila, three suspects hijacked an Audi and sped off.

The owner of the vehicle reacted swiftly and got into his brother’s vehicle to chase the suspects, alerting a JMPD officer along Wemmer Pan Road for assistance.

A shootout ensued after the suspects abandoned the vehicle near a mine dump. One suspect was shot and killed by the JMPD officer and the two accomplices escaped.

It was later discovered that the deceased suspect used a replica firearm to commit the hijacking and to threaten the officer during the pursuit.
