De Villiers Street is 21% done

A separate meeting has taken place with businesses affected by construction.

AFTER last week’s Southern COURIER’S front page ‘Construction pains’, Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), Development Manager Shaakira Chohan confirmed to the COURIER that they have been liaising with residents of De Villiers Street, Turffontein on an ongoing and continuous basis to update them on the construction taking place.

Shaakira acknowledges that the construction on De Villiers Street is currently 21 per cent done.

“Disruptions due to construction were inevitable and the team is doing their best to ensure that the work is executed properly and affected parties are informed timeously of the work,” explained Shaakira.

As such, the following measures by JDA have been put in place or are currently being undertaken:

• Notification boards of construction (smaller boards per block as they work with contact details of the community liaising officer (CLO) for queries)

• Door to door notifications by the CLO

• Distributed printed leaflets informing the residents of the work that is programmed for their block for the next week or two

• JDA are also arranging block meetings going forward to reiterate the work that will be executed for the week/two weeks ahead, which it is hoped will improve communication with stakeholders (these will be taking place within the next week and relevant notifications will be sent alerting the residents to these sessions).

• A separate meeting has taken place with businesses affected by construction.

• Additional meetings with businesses, schools and others affected on Main Street will also be taking place.
