Senior JMPD official suspended

JMPD Deputy Director Mike Smith has been deployed to take over command of the region.

THE Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) on February 13 suspended its Region F2 commander, Deputy Director Faith Lengwati, for alleged insubordination and conduct that brought the city into disrepute.

The allegations against Lengwati came after community members complained that the JMPD Kenilworth Satellite Station was not operating as intended, in that it was not properly staffed and operating hours were reduced.

Public Safety MMC Michael Sun said, “When we embarked on the Kenilworth Satellite Station project, we wanted JMPD to serve the residents in the area on a 24/7 basis so crime would be reduced, by-laws enforced and drug dealing become a thing of the past. However we now receive a number of complaints regarding the poor service at the satellite station.

“We will ensure that officials are held to account and deliver the services as we have promised to the people.”

An investigation is under way while the disciplinary hearing process continues.
