Plastic for owl boxes
Two great environmental initiatives rolled into one - reduce and reuse plastic and support the growth of owl populations.
HARTFORD College’s environmental focus for term three is looking at the hazard of plastic in our environment.
Learners got to learn the greatest problem associated with plastic is that it can take hundreds of years to disintegrate in open environments and rubbish dumps. Also, rivers and oceans are becoming full of plastic waste that clogs waterways and kills birds and fish, that accidentally swallowed it.
Edna Botha, Grade R teacher, has a passion for owls and has made contact with the Owl Rescue Centre who actively collects plastic bottles that are then ‘up-cycled’ to make owl boxes.
This also allowed an opportunity for learners to get to know more about owls and that they feed on rats and mice and are a fantastic natural way to reduce the number of rodents in urban areas.

Two great environmental initiatives rolled into one – reduce and reuse plastic and support the growth of owl populations.
Hartford College children have enthusiastically embraced the cause and are collecting plastic bottles by the hundreds.
