Metrorail investigates Booysens train collision

Lillian Mofukeng, Metrorail spokesperson, told members of the media Metrorail will investigate the root of this collision.

ABOUT 112 train commuters were reported injured following a train collision in Booysens on September 4.

It is believed a Metrorail train coming from Faraday towards Booysens collided with a Naledi Train coming from New Canada. Of the 112 commuters, seven sustained serious injuries. Four Metrorail crew members who were also involved received medical assistance.

According to eyewitness Thembisa Lukwe, after the collision commuters were shocked and couldn’t understand what happened. Booysens residents rushed to offer assistance and provide commuters with water and other necessary tools.

“I am glad there was no loss of life and officials worked hard to ensure everyone was assisted,” said Lukwe.

The train stations affected during the collision were Crown Mines, Booysens, George Goch and Doornfontein. By 2pm it was back to business as school learners were able to use the trains.

Lillian Mofukeng, Metrorail spokesperson, told members of the media Metrorail will investigate the root of this collision.

“We are actually busy with a programme in this section whereby we are upgrading our signalling system. We are of the view, as Metrorail, one train incident is too many. We will stop at nothing to ensure each and every incident like this has a board of inquiry to help us understand the root of the incident,” said Lillian.

The cost of the collision is still unknown but a full investigation is underway by Metrorail technicians.
