Let’s help you make the perfect dombolo
Dombolo is undoubtedly one of our most popular, proudly South African foods.

It’s delicious, filling (which makes it perfect if you want your meal to stretch), and has a fresh, buttery taste that will make you say “kumnandi” with pride.
Here’s an easy guide on how to make a delicious dombolo in two quick steps.
What you’ll need:
- 165 ml of flour
- 85 ml of Maize Meal
- 5 ml of baking powder
- 15ml of KNORROX Spicy Chicken Soup
- 65 ml of margarine
- 65 ml of cold water
Step one
Add the dry ingredients to a bowl and mix well. Create a little “hole” in the mixture then pour in the water and mix carefully until the dough is smooth and wet. The dough should be slightly sticky. (If the dough feels dry, keep adding water until it’s soft).
Step two
Now the dough is ready to be added to your stew. Add spoonfuls of the dough to the top of your stew. Cover with a lid and simmer until dumplings are cooked through – this should take about 10-15 minutes.
Now that you’ve made your dombolo, here’s how you can make it a meal…

Beef stew
What better way to get the family together than with a delicious, creamy beef sishebo? The key to making this stew thick and creamy is to allow the KNORROX beef soup and beef stock cube to simmer for a good few minutes to release its rich flavour – these ingredients will also add a meaty flavour to your dish.
Dumplings taste good on their own, but they are even better when paired with a delicious, meaty stew.
