Blankets will be accepted at the JSPCA

“We will be accepting any blankets new or used, but still in good condition."

With winter just around the corner, the mornings are getting colder and night temperatures are dropping.

Liana Marx from the Johannesburg Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) said they have 127 dog kennels which require blankets for the animals.

“We will be accepting any blankets, new or used, but still in good condition.

“Sometimes dogs get bored and they start to chew the blankets if it is under-felt and some of them you can just tear it apart. The problem with these are that the bits will end up in the dog’s stomach, causing problems,” said Marx.

She said as they are also focusing on community outreach, they came across many animals that do not have any blankets.

“Our inspectors always have spare blankets in their vehicles, but these blankets are getting less.

“Lockdown has caused many families to struggle to cope and many of them cannot afford to feed their beloved pets.
“We have been receiving appeals for assistance on a daily basis,” she said.

She added that they have been fortunate to receive donated food that enabled them to help feed animals, but with the huge appeal for help, they are also running low.

“The amount of severely underweight animals coming in to us is just heartbreaking. One such animal was Thor, an adult Boerboel that weighed a mere 18kg.
“Thor, as we named him, came in as a stray and by looking at the poor animal you could see he has not eaten in days.”

She added that all animals need our help, but in these extremely difficult times it is the Thors that are forgotten and they are the ones we need to get to.

“That’s why we are appealing to the public to either donate a blanket or a bag of food, even if it is half used.
“An animal that has nothing will be forever grateful to have been able to have something to eat.”

Monetary donations towards the JSPCA will also be much appreciated, as these donated funds are utilised to assist animals in need.
