More than 800 water meters stolen

Clr Chame asks the community to work together for a cleaner and safe environment.

Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame said she is at her wit’s end because of thieves who are stealing water meters daily.

She said from January to the present more than 800 water meters were replaced in Joburg South.

“Water is scarce and thousands of litres of clean water have been wasted once a call has been logged with Joburg Water.

“SAPS and JMPD must do proper investigations into scrap yards because I believe they are the people buying the copper coming out of these water meters. We cannot do this alone, residents must start taking responsibility for protecting our community. These thieves must be caught and pay for their actions.

“Filth and dirt are taking over our area, especially in La Rochelle. People are dumping at an alarming rate. This is a breeding ground for rats and is becoming a health hazard. It is also not good for the environment.

Mrs Sehopi from La Rochelle in Forest Street reports most of the service delivery issues in the area to Clr Faeeza Chame.

“People without bins usually go and dump their rubbish. Most people don’t pay for their utilities and they don’t have account numbers. When you require a bin from Pikitup they require to see your utility bill before they can issue you with a bin.

“These people are lazy or just don’t care to dump their dirt at the dumping sites. I would like to urge everyone in our community to keep our area clean. You live in it. It is your environment. Let us work together,” she said.
