WATCH: Valuable lessons at Box The Habit event

Learners from different schools in the south gathered at Kibler Park Recreation Centre on October 10 for the Box The Habit campaign.

The SANCA Rosettenville outreach team (Ke Moja Alternatives) and local boxing trainers hosted this substance abuse prevention campaign in commemorating SANCA’s October month as the OcSOBER month of sobriety.

SANCA programmes and project coordinator Kgomotso Dhlamini said the campaign’s purpose is to provide edutainment through sports, providing a safe space for high school learners.

The campaign also allowed the organisation to engage with participants at risk of substance abuse. Other topics and social issues they covered include bullying, GBV, crime and the replacement of unhealthy recreational activities and habits using sports as an alternative.

They selected boxing as the preferred sport of choice, hence the name of the campaign, Box The Habit.

“When we say Box The Habit, it is entertainment using sports for us to box the habits of substance abuse, sexual abuse, bullying, anger and self-defence. We have several stakeholders helping us to box these habits.

“We understand that some family members may abuse you at home in various ways. We have Childline, Teddy Bear Clinic, SANCA Rosettenville, SAPS Mondeor and Glenanda Library to help.

“We also thank the City of Johannesburg for giving us this facility. The day was fun with boxing, weightlifting, tug-of-war, aerobics, drummies, beatboxing, music and dancing,” she said.

Schools that participated include Kibler Park Secondary School, Israel Christian School, South Rand High School, Forest High School, Sir John Adamson High School Drummies and Hoërskool Die Fakkel.

They separated learners into five groups where they taught them about substance abuse, sexual abuse, bullying, anger management and self-defence, wellness, and a healthy lifestyle. The groups then had a report-back about what they learnt and shared experiences with their peers.

The anger management and self-defence class was managed by Kibler Gym and McAusland boxing management.
