Mondeor community holds demonstration urging for road rehabilitation

This act emphasises the need for improved safety and accessibility, calling on officials to prioritise vital infrastructure improvements.

The Action for Accountability Project, in partnership with Mondeor Meteors Football Club, hosted a short placard demonstration on Daylesford Road opposite the Mondeor Meteors’ grounds.

This peaceful protest urged the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) to fully rehabilitate the road and clear the rubble left after pipe repairs that began over two years ago.

The community had previously called on the JRA to close the large holes left behind after it replaced the pipes.

Dawood Raphalalane, a community facilitator, said, “While the JRA eventually responded by closing the holes, and the community remains grateful for that, they did not complete the rehabilitation work. They did not reinstate the damaged road and left piles of rubble along the roadside, causing a hazard and an eyesore in the area.”

The Action for Accountability CivActs team, with Mondeor Meteors Football Club, organised another demonstration to stress the urgency of finishing the job.

Their placards displayed messages calling for the JRA to properly rehabilitate Daylesford Road by removing rubble and reinstating the damaged road surface. The community remains hopeful this demonstration will prompt the JRA to take swift action and restore the road to its proper condition, ensuring safety and cleanliness for residents and road users.

A representative from Johannesburg Road Agency said: “The excavated area was left open without backfilling after repairs to a burst water pipe. Rehabilitation work has been done by the JRA, and the leftover materials (river sand/concrete) will be collected in the coming week. The JRA would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
