Civic Aid celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The event aimed at shining a spotlight on inclusivity by blending holiday fun with the observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Civic Aid, in partnership with Disabled People of South Africa, South African National Civics Organisation (SANCO), the Johannesburg Expo Centre and SOJO Helping Hands Foundation, held a heartfelt Christmas Tree of Life event for people living with disabilities.

This was done in commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The celebration, which took place on December 3 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, welcomed people with disabilities and aimed to celebrate the strength, resilience and unwavering determination of individuals with disabilities, highlighting their invaluable contributions to society.

With a focus on inclusivity, the gathering fostered a sense of belonging, further emphasizing the significance of inclusion for people with disabilities as it creates a space where diverse abilities are valued, allowing everyone, including those with disabilities, to flourish and make meaningful contributions.

Through the Christmas Tree of Life event, the participating organisations not only marked a global observance but also championed the power of community and the essential need for equal opportunities for all.

The celebration included an informative session which shone light on the meaning of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, words of encouragement from those with disabilities, a delicious lunch and a photoshoot with Santa.

The celebration, which was a first of its’ kind for non-profit organisation Civic Aid, was a memorable moment for attendees, organisers and sponsors, where they could come together to share in the Christmas cheer and reflect on the importance of embracing diversity.
