From waste to wonderful: Joburg artist makes unique sculptures

A Johannesburg artist is turning trash into sculptures and inspiring others to overcome fear and see the beauty in transformation.

Mmutla Kgwanka, a Johannesburg artist, is making a name for himself with his sculptures created from recycled plastic and rusted zinc.

Inspired by the works of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, an Italian sculptor and architect, Kgwanka’s sculptures convey a powerful message of transformation and overcoming fear.

He grew up in Johannesburg, doing paintings and other art. He joined the Anton Smit studio and worked with him as an assistant from 2001 to 2005.

Mmutla would then work with Angus Taylor as a studio assistant from 2006 to 2007.

Mmutlas’ sculpture style represents movement in some way.

He recently won the Recycle, Reimagine, Renew Sculpture Competition held by Mall of the South, taking home R20 000.

“My inspiration comes from trash. I believe I can give trash a second value while also cleaning up the environment,” said Kwankga.

“I would like to use my prize to invest in young artists and give them work and skills, especially in Joburg south where I come from,” said Kwankga.

With a background in painting and sculpture, after honing his skills working with Smit and Taylor, Kgwanka’s sculptures became visually striking and began to carry a deeper meaning.

“I want viewers to take away the message of overcoming fear. Fear is the greatest enemy of people, and it is a self-prison. One must not let fear stand in the way of life,” said Kgwanka.

Today, Kgwanka works from his studio, Asisebenze Art Atelier, in Joburg, where he continues to create sculptures that inspire and uplift. His story is a testament to the power of creativity and transformation.
