Love From Above NPO empowers children through personal care

The initiative gave the children crucial life tools.

From nail care to oral hygiene, and from puberty talks to fresh haircuts, children in the South Hills community spent a day learning important lessons on how to take care of themselves – inside and out.

Before term two began, Love From Above held a special hygiene awareness day aimed at helping children prepare not only for academics and sports, but also to return to school with confidence.

“It’s not just about staying clean,” said managing director Termayne Sivpersad. “Good hygiene is about confidence, self-respect, and taking charge of your well-being.”

The day kicked off with a group discussion on basic hygiene, including handwashing and showering or bathing.

After that, the boys and girls split up into smaller groups for more sensitive and age-appropriate talks about puberty and self-care.

The boys were also treated to fresh haircuts – something that gave many of them a boost in confidence. In addition to the talks and trims, each child received a delicious lunch and a goodie bag filled with essentials like soap, toothpaste, a toothbrush, and a nail clipper.

Sivpersad shared that many of the children who attend their events either don’t have the means to buy these hygiene products or simply lack the knowledge on how to care for their bodies properly.

“You can go to school, but if you don’t have the right materials or resources to look after your body, other learners can bully you,” she said. “So we want to ensure we help the children who do not have.”

The Love From Above team has been working in the South Hills area for the past four years and collaborates closely with community leaders to identify children most in need of support.

They hope to make this hygiene day a regular event, held every school term, depending on available funds.

“These are lifelong skills,” said Sivpersad. “When children are equipped with knowledge, they grow into strong, confident individuals.”

She also extended a thank you to the sponsors and volunteers who made the day possible. “Our team often takes time out of their day-to-day lives to plan and be present,” she added.

Love From Above continues to make a big difference – one child at a time.
