WATCH: Gauteng Tactical Unit takes safety initiative into Joburg South communities
GTU is expanding community outreach, self-defence training and crime-prevention programmes while calling for support from businesses and community partners.
The Gauteng Tactical Unit (GTU) has taken its safety initiative beyond words and into action through direct community-based programmes.
Under the banner ‘Building Safer Communities Together’, the organisation is working on the ground with communities across Johannesburg to empower residents and create safer environments.
GTU’s current initiatives include community outreach programmes, safety awareness campaigns, self-defence training for women and children, gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) support initiatives, and community crime-prevention efforts.
Expanding reach
The organisation says while it is already active in communities, the need is greater than the resources currently available.

GTU has already appealed to the Department of Community Safety and Social Development for support, but it needs private businesses, CSI programmes and other community partners to assist in expanding these initiatives into more communities across the province.
“We are already on the ground. With the right support, we can reach further, empower more people and make a greater impact,” said GTU director Claudinne Thomas.
