Judging Idols: Benjamin leaves the building

When I imagined Benjamin would not win the show, I did not anticipate him leaving the show after having delivered one of the stronger performances of the night.

On Sunday night, the contestants had to sing songs from their favourite idols, and while others hit the right notes, others sounded like amateur singers searching for fame.

As much as the likes of Innocent and Crystalene have proved they are rightfully among the top nine, their performances on Sunday were horrible.

Crystalene slaughtered Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Stronger’, with one of the worst performance I have seen at this stage of the competition. Although she kind of recovered her performance towards the end, the damage had already been done.

From delivering one of the best performances of the night the previous week, to being absolutely horrible; Innocent was one of the people who were lucky to survive. It puzzles me how these two remain in the show while Benjamin is out.

What I liked about Benjamin is that he chose a song best suited to his ‘awkwardness’ and delivered one of the better performances of the evening. Unfortunately, South Africa does not get to hear or see him on Idols Season 9.

Two of the best performances of the evening were delivered by Sonke and Musa. The two proved to be a couple of musical geniuses. Great song choices, followed by great delivery… absolutely amazing, both of them can easily compete with the likes of Brenden, another great performer.

Reality is that, overall Idols winner is not necessarily the best singer in the competition. We have seen that in previous years and should expect see it again this year. All I can say is, I am glad the boys are back in the competition.
