REUVEN – The JSPCA would like to thank all pet owners who took responsibility for their pets during the festive season.

Although fireworks were rife in some areas, we had a decrease in the number of animals admitted from the Johannesburg South area to the JSPCA as stray/abandoned when compared to last year. Unfortunately the Krugersdorp SPCA experienced a dramatic increase.

During 31 December 2013 to 2 January 2014 we had more than 50 animals admitted as stray and more than 25 animals brought into the Krugersdorp Branch due to the use of fireworks. We are proud to say that more than half of the animals admitted during the month of December have been reunited with their owners thanks to owners who had their pets microchipped.

Microchipping is a permanent way of ensuring that your pet is reunited with you if he is lost and is brought in to the SPCA or a veterinarian. All animals that are brought into the JSPCA are immediately scanned to see if they have a microchip. The JSPCA advocates microchipping of your pets and can do this for you at a cost of R120 per pet.

We also had no reports or requests to rescue any animals that were injured due to the irresponsible use of fireworks or injuring themselves from trying to get away from the noise.

If your animal was lost during the festive season, please report this to your local and neighbouring SPCAs and veterinarians. You can also place lost posters in and around your neighbourhood allowing someone to be able to contact you should they spot your pet.
