Canoeist off to world champs

JOHANNESBURG – Following in the wake of the bronze medal earned by Bridgitte Hartley at the London Olympics in 2012, the canoeing unions are working flat out to uplift and improve the overall standards of sprint, the Olympic Discipline throughout South Africa.

After some stringent sprint training camps and an exhaustive three days of selections, Gauteng is very proud that three u.23 as well as three u.18 paddlers from the province who were selected to be in the 13 man squad, to represent South Africa at the ICF Junior and u.23 Canoe Sprint World Championship in Welland, Ontario, Canada, from August 1 to 4.

Martin van den Bergh who has been a top Gauteng sprinter for many years has been selected for the u.23 South African squad to participate in the world sprint championships in Canada and is looking forward to the challenge.

Van den Bergh is currently studying BCom Sport Management degree at University of Johannesburg – keen to learn sport club management and organizational skills while also being the sprint coach at Wemmer Pan where he is training youth very successfully.
