THERE is a 50/50 chance that one of the two Southern-based Premier Soccer League clubs could play in the finals of this prestigious Nedbank Cup.
Kaizer Chiefs have drawn Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates will face Maritzburg United. The draw took place on Monday April14 at the PSL offices, and to the excitement of all present the two rivals of the South were drawn separately.
Just four clubs remain in the battle for glory in Africa’s richest football tournament as the Nedbank Cup reaches the semi-final stage with clubs 180 minutes away from collecting the R7-million first prize.
The last four draw has produced two intriguing semi-final ties to look forward to on the weekend of May 3. The PSL will confirm venues and times in due course.
Over the past week, Bidvest Wits, Kaizer Chiefs, Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates all booked their places in the semi-finals.
The Nedbank Cup is South Africa’s oldest knockout competition and a tournament steeped in history and folklore, where David meets Goliath and often comes out on top. It is a competition that changes lives, both in terms of being a launch-pad for the careers of players already signed with clubs – such as Bafana Bafana midfielder Andile Jali, whose career blossomed after his heroic performances for University of Pretoria in the 2009 tournament – or those still aspiring to be professionals.
With 12 goals scored in the quarter finals, R120 000 has been added to the R770 000 bring the Nedbank Cup’s R 1 million Goals4Goal target even closer. The monies will be used to build a multi-purpose sport court for a school in the country. Sinavuma Primary school received this sport development injection last year.
“One of our objectives is to be a bank for all South Africans. and football has proven to be a great platform to connect with the communities we serve. The bank will continue to make a positive contribution towards empowering football stars and communities with the skills and resources they need to make things happen,” said Sydney Mbhele, Divisional Executive for Group Marketing at Nedbank.
