CSA signs agreement to fast-track cricket development

A new partnership between CSA and schools is set to fast-track cricket development in schools.

CRICKET South Africa (CSA) signed an operational agreement with the Departments of Basic Education (DBE) and Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) on Monday, August 17.

This agreement will give practical impetus to CSA’s development and transformation programmes by linking schools cricket with CSA’s regional performance centres and hubs.

“This is arguably one of the most practical arrangements we have ever conceived,” said CSA president, Chris Nenzani. “It enables us to combine the resources of all three organisations, especially our human capital, to tackle one of the biggest challenges that we face and that is to improve cricket playing opportunities at disadvantaged schools.

“This initiative will support our existing development plans to achieve meaningful growth in the quality and number of schools playing cricket. The emphasis of our cooperation will be on developing cricket in township and rural schools where opportunities to play the game are very limited.

“School sport is the bedrock for elite sports, not only in South Africa, but around the world. There are benefits for children to play cricket that go well beyond the game itself. If they are meaningfully occupied on the sports field they are far less likely to get involved in anti-social behaviour, bad lifestyles and are likely to be far better achievers in the classroom as well.”
