Morgan: best Gauteng finisher at Fish River Marathon

Top paddlers from South Africa and international including the Gauteng top finishers - Morgan Ziervogel took part in the Fish River.

MORGAN Ziervogel met the numerous obstacles of this month’s annual two day 80km Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon, to finish 14th of the women competitors and the race’s 145th K1 (kayak) finisher overall, in a time of 6:32.

Now at u.23 level, Ziervogel has proved herself to be the top Gauteng paddler in her age group at local races over the past few years and was motivated to take on ‘the Fish’ single K1, to be in the competitive category of the elite women’s group.

The race takes place near Cradock in the Eastern Cape, from Grassridge Dam and has a guaranteed water release, as the dam sends water down the river for a couple of weeks in October to assist farmers – who fill their dams and use the water for the planting season in Spring. It is usually the first A grade white water river that Gauteng paddlers take on, after learning on the limited Highveld rivers at low winter levels.

The Ziervogel family are members of the Johannesburg Canoe Club based at Wemmer Pan.

Pleased with her race despite some difficulties, Morgan’s biggest motivation came from lining up at the start to race against the Olympic bronze medallist, Bridgitte Hartley, who finished as second-placed woman at the event.

The Hansa Fish River Marathon has huge fast steep chutes, as well as enormous wave trains and massive rapids; which appeal to paddlers who enjoy huge white water waves and challenges.

Alex Masina from Turffontein, also a member of the club, was the second junior finisher.
