Alberton runners take on virtual Comrades
Thirty athletes from the Alberton Athletics Club took part in the Race the Comrades Legends event.

Following the cancellation of this year’s Comrades Marathon for the first time since World War II, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) announced plans for their first-ever virtual event.
Race the Comrades Legends took place on June 14 and challenged people from all walks of life to run or walk distances ranging from 5km all the way up to 90km.
Over 40 000 entrants from 103 participating nations signed up to be a part of the inaugural event, including over 30 athletes from Alberton Athletics Club.
Among them, Darius van der Schyf, Charl Olivier and Mike Brandon-Kirby successfully completed the 45km distance, while Steve Joubert, Ian Kingon, Thomas Xaba and Anton Ferreira all went the distance by running the full 90km.
CMA chairperson Cheryl Winn thanked South Africans and the world at large for supporting what was ‘The Ultimate Virtual Race’, making it an all-round inclusive running affair, and showcasing the camaraderie and triumph of the human spirit in one epic event, especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
