Yesterday (June 29), more than 200 people took to the streets in Montclair demanding that spaza shops owned by foreign nationals are shut down.

One of the protesters, Sibongile Fakude, said the march was intended to warn undocumented foreign nationals that residents were aware of alleged criminal activities in the community.
“We want them to know that we have identified houses where these alleged crimes are taking place. We want those who are in the country illegally to leave before law enforcement is forced to remove them from the community,” she said.
She called on the community to support marches aimed at removing illegal immigrants in the country.

“There has been a lot of criminal activity in the area, including the alleged sale of drugs and expired food at some tuckshops. We are not saying that everyone with legal documentation should leave the country. Our concern is with people who are in the country illegally,” said Fakude.
