PHC services to resume in ward 64

AFTER a four-year battle, Ward 64 will once again have a mobile primary health care clinic in the area.

Ethekwini Municipality closed down the mobile clinics which were operating in the area in 2005, resulting in residents being forced to visit Wentworth Hospital for healthcare services. Many of the residents who don’t have access to private vehicles were forced to catch two buses to reach the hospital, as there is no direct bus route to it.

Attempts to reinstate the clinics by ward councillor, Billie Prinsloo proved futile. Although the chairman of the Montwood Senior Citizens Care Centre, Isobel Goswell, permitted the use of Tray Bang Hall for the clinic, clearance from the health department had not been received.

After numerous petitions and personal visits to the health department, negotiations resumed a month ago. On Friday morning, 2 August, approval was received from the health department and the clinic will be in operation on Thursday, 8 August.

Residents can visit the clinic on Thursdays and Fridays between 8.30am and 3pm at Tray Bang Hall, 199 Kenyon Howden Road, Montclair. A comprehensive service will provide maternal and child healthcare, ante-natal care, family planning, screening for TB and HIV and other primary healthcare needs.

Ward councillor, Billie Prinsloo said, “I am delighted that the tenacity of the community has paid off.”
