Children learn fishing skills and water safety at Brighton Beach

Fishing veterans and fish enthusiasts came together for a fishing clinic on The Bluff to cultivate a new interest in the activity.

ALMOST 300 people came together at Brighton Beach to expand their knowledge on the world of fishing when the Merewent Fishing Forum held a free fishing clinic for children on May 23.

Mithesh Harricharan, the media liaison for the Merewent Fishing Forum, said that the clinic was envisioned to equip young children with practical fishing skills, which, in time, might even prove beneficial to their households.

“Apart from the teaching we wanted to create some family fun memories as well as strengthen community bonds,” said Harricharan.

Catch of the day

The day kicked off with an environmental talk by The Litterboom Project who spoke about the conservation of the ocean and rivers. Keeping on messages of safety, Lifesavers SA spoke on water safety and demonstrated how they use their water boats. Some of the best anglers from the area spoke on the basics of cutting appropriate bait, fishing techniques, as well as how to possibly look at fishing as a sport.

Adding to the family fun thrill of the day, members of the Brave Biker Club did a superbike drive-through. This allowed children and their families to get a closer look at the motorcycles and even pose for photographs. The event was also supported by The Bluff sea cadets as well as eThekwini Municipality.

Harricharan extended his gratitude to all who had contributed to its success.

“A special thank you to my executive team members for making this event super successful,” he said.

Upcoming fishing competition

The Merewent Fishing Forum is urging the community to be a part of its next fishing tournament set for June 28 at Brighton Beach. Entry will cost R50 and cash prizes are up for grabs. The tournament is open to men, women and children.
