DUE to an increase in crimes committed on business properties, Brighton Beach SAP has issued guidelines to reduce risk.
The crimes vary from business robberies, housebreakings and general thefts. While crime may not be wholly avoided, communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux said the following guidelines should help diminish the danger:
* Rather use drop safes, instead of collecting excessive amounts of cash in cash registers.
* Ensure visibility throughout the property.
* Use cameras strategically to ensure people can be clearly identified and maintain entrance and exit control.
* Illuminate all areas.
* Don’t have the same person open and lock-up every day.
* Have a plan in place for transporting cash, with as few people involved as possible.
* Screen employees.
* Create a security plan, including ways to raise the alarm in emergencies and procedures to follow if suspicious people enter the premises.
* Involve neighbouring businesses in security plans to maximise protection.
* Employ a PSIRA accredited security company.
* Closing of tills and cashing up should not be done at the same time.
