Level 2 weather warning issued for eThekwini

KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs is urging residents to express caution over a scheduled storm.

A SEVERE level 2 thunderstorm warning has been issued for eThekwini residents on June 4 until June 5. The South African Weather Service (Saws) are urging residents to prepare for harsh conditions.

The warning itself would come into effect at 10:00 on Thursday (June 4), remaining active until 23:59 on Friday (June 5). Forecasters expect widespread thunderstorms, heavy downpours, frequent lightning, potentially damaging winds and hail across large sections of the province.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) are also encouraging residents to stay vigilant.

  • Localised flooding of roads and bridges.
  • Damage to infrastructure and informal settlements.
  • Difficult driving conditions due to poor visibility and slippery roads.
  • Damage caused by hail and strong winds.
  • Disruptions to communities affected by flooding or storm damage.

Express caution

  • Avoid unnecessary activities at sea and along the coastline during this period. 
  • Beachgoers, anglers, surfers and recreational water users are advised to remain vigilant and to follow all safety guidance issued by authorities. 
  • Operators of small boats are urged to delay launching until conditions improve.

The emergency services teams are on high alert and monitoring the situation closely. The municipality calls on all residents to take heed of the warning and act responsibly to ensure personal safety and the safety of others.
