Wentworth dancers workshop on Broadway
A GROUP of young talented Wentworth dancers are honing their skills in America thanks to an invitation from the New York Broadway Dance Centre.
The dancers from Dance Movement will participate in professional workshops with some of the world’s best choreographers, including Tyce Deorio, Travis Wall, Sonja Tye, Twitch, Tabatha and Napoleon, which will culminate in a collaborated performance with Dance Movement choreographer, Jarryd Watson.
Dance Movement takes youths from the streets in the Wentworth community and gives them the opportunity to develop dancing skills and talents with a platform to expose them. “We have inspired these youngsters to achieve their goals in life and have also stopped them from getting involved in the drugs, gangs and alcohol abuse prevalent in our notorious community,” said Jarryd.
With much success over the past six years, including representing South Africa at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Scotland and placing second in the United Dance Organisation world championships street dance competition in England, Jarryd is certain the new crop of young dancers will make a success of their New York trip.
The group raised funds for the journey themselves and the Broadway Dance Centre and South African Airways helped them make it all possible.
“Although this is a tough industry, I am very passionate about what I do and I’m so excited my dancers and I are experiencing an opportunity that dancers worldwide dream about. We will have an opportunity to share what we learn with fellow dancers here in Durban when we return.’’
