Refinery drill considers alternative assembly point in emergencies

ENGEN held its annual emergency procedure drill on Thursday, 24 October at its Tara Road complex in Wentworth, with much interaction between local residents.

The purpose of the drill is to ensure the readiness of the refinery staff and external emergency personnel in dealing with threats.

Ambulance and fire services, police and the eThekwini Municipality were on hand to participate in the drill alongside Engen staff.

Community members were also given an opportunity to witness the exercise and ask questions. The overriding concern was that of safety in the event of a real emergency. During talks it was agreed that Engen would step up initiatives to inform the public of emergency procedures, including what each siren means.

Tabled as matters to be looked into by the refinery was whether Clairwood Racecourse was still a feasible assembly point if an evacuation of the surrounding suburbs was necessary and the formation of safety forums within each of the surrounding suburbs with a network connected to Engen.
