Local radio station punts local talent
Upcoming local youth radio station 'Off da Streets' is taking the air waves by storm.

Station founders, Lynden Anderson (24) and Sethembile Gwala (18) want to create a platform where local young, upcoming artists can have their music publicised. As their slogan, ‘Durban’s Home Grown’ implies, the station will focus largely on playing locally brewed music. The station currently broadcasts throughout Montclair, Yellowwood Park, Bluff, Merewent, Malvern, Wentworth, Lamontville, Woodlands and some parts of Westville and Umlazi, with hopes of reaching a broader audience in the months to come.
“We are currently in the process of raising funds to buy a repeater, more broadcasting equipment and purchase a licence with ICASA,” said station CEO, Lynden Anderson. The station will be funded through the broadcasting of mixtapes and advertising. Fundraising concerts will also be hosted to assist in community projects. “Many radio stations don’t play mixtapes so we wanted to afford new artists the platform to launch their music. We want to inspire the youth to do something meaningful with their lives, with clear goals in mind and a way of achieving them,” said Lynden.
‘Off da Streets’ promises an entertaining line-up of comedy, celebrity news, gospel, hip-hop sessions and more that will keep your ears glued to your radio. The station will hold auditions for more presenters from 28 November to 30 November. Listen to them on 104.8fm between 7am and 11pm and follow them on Twitter at @offdastreetsfm_.
