Armed hijacker gets 17 years

A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 17 years' imprisonment by the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 12 December, for his role in an armed hijacking.

Sihle Jacob Mlaba along with three other men hijacked a motorist and his wife in Pindleberry Road, Mobeni on Friday, 25 January 2013. They held them at gunpoint before making off in their white VW Jetta.

Police were quickly contacted and a search for the stolen vehicle was launched. While searching the Umlazi area, Montclair SAP’s W/O Tiger Ramsamy came across and chased the stolen vehicle. The driver of the stolen vehicle lost control and the vehicle overturned, before it crashed into a house. Three men fled while Mlaba was arrested.

The vehicle which had extensive damage was recovered as well as an unlicensed firearm.

Mlaba was charged with aggravated robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of unlicensed ammunition. He received 15 years for the first charge and two years combined for the second and third.

More arrests are imminent.
