Montclair public pool temporarily closed over poor water quality

Ward 64 councillor Norman Gilbert said an update will be shared as soon as water quality meets the required standards.

RESIDENTS in Montclair and surroundings will have to wait before returning to Alex Bulley Pool which has been temporarily closed following a deterioration in water quality after a high number of visitors over the weekend.

Ward 64 councillor Norman Gilbert said a reopening date had not been confirmed, as maintenance work is underway to restore the pool’s water quality.

“Municipal maintenance teams are currently on site carrying out intensive scrubbing and deep cleaning of the pool walls and floor, along with water treatment balancing, to restore safe and crystal-clear swimming conditions. The district team is working to complete the maintenance as quickly as possible. An update will be shared as soon as water quality standards are met and the facility is cleared to reopen,” said Gilbert.

In a separate statement, eThekwini Municipality urged residents to reduce water consumption amid the ongoing heatwave that has driven up water demand across the City.

“The municipality is urging residents to reduce their water usage to give storage reservoirs an opportunity to replenish and recover adequate levels. Sustained high consumption is placing significant strain on the system, with several reservoirs unable to cope with current demand.  Reducing water use is therefore critical to helping restore reservoir levels, stabilise system pressure and improve the reliability of water supply across the City,” said eThekwini in a statement.
