Station head nabs fleeing burglars

Montclair SAP's station commander, Col Riaan Vorster and Capt Perumal arrested two men, aged 18 and 20 for housebreaking and theft during a stop and search operation on Friday, 31 January.

The officers approached the men, one of whom was carrying a blue school backpack with a child’s name on it. The bag was searched and an electronic photo frame along with other electronic devices were found. Upon being questioned, the men could not provide an explanation as to where the devices came from.

They were then taken into custody. The school whose name appeared on the bag was contacted and the owner of the belongings was traced. Upon further investigation, the items were traced to a housebreaking in Charles Burge Road, which had happened earlier that day.

The home-owner, who wished to remain unnamed, said she was in the house when the men broke in. She saw one of them and he immediately fled.

“Montclair SAP were fantastic. We received a call from them telling us they had found our belongings. I also thank Park Patrol for their speedy response and our neighbour who contacted a family member, alerting them to the incident,” she said. She urged neighbours to be vigilant at all times and for them to get to know each other. Home-owners are advised to arm their alarms when they are leaving their properties.

The men appeared in the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 3 February.
