Alert domestic arms police to arrest thief

AN alert witness who gave police an accurate description of a thief allowed police to quickly track down the man and make an arrest on the Bluff on Monday, 25 February.

Early in the morning, a domestic worker noted a vehicle being broken into.

According to the police report, she told him to stop and he became verbally abusive towards her, telling her to mind her own business. He then jumped the wall with items taken from the car.

Sergeant Paul van den Berg of the Brighton Beach detective crime office investigated the incident, after the car owner reported it to the station. He spoke to the owner of the vehicle, who listed the stolen items and the domestic worker who gave an accurate description of the perpetrator, including the clothing he wore.

The sergeant began his investigation by questioning neighbours and visiting regular hotspots. While en route to attend another crime scene, he noticed a man who matched the description of the thief, carrying a black bag.

A search of the man revealed the stolen items and he arrested and charged the man for theft out of a motor vehicle. “It is of the utmost importance that people share as much information on a crime they witnessed with the police, even if they might think it is insignificant at the time. I appreciate the co-operation I received from the domestic worker and the attention she paid to the detailed description of the perpetrator,” said Sgt van den Berg.

Brighton Beach SAP management commends Sgt van den Berg for his vigilance and the quick arrest and the domestic worker for the prime role she played in the investigation.
