Cable theft attempt leaves Woodlands in the dark
Trio seen by police officer near Higginson Highway.
A botched attempt to steal electricity cables left Woodlands residents in the dark in the early hours of Friday morning, 4 April.
Three men were seen by a resident at about 3am climbing on street poles near the corner of Glanville and Radcliffe roads. They alerted Montclair SAP who reacted immediately. Moments after the call was made, the electricity went off. The resident screamed at the men, who tried to flee with about 50 metres of cables.
With cables in hand, the men dashed off in the direction of Woodlands Sports Club. When police arrived at the scene, the entire street was dark and the men were nowhere to be seen. Police searched the area, to no avail. Copper cables were found abandoned in the street and in between houses leading up to the sports club.
After the search for the men in the bushes near the sports club proved fruitless, police cordoned off the area where the men had attempted to steal the cables. The municipality was called in to handle the scene which also had exposed cables hanging from the poles.
The trio were seen by another member of the force, crossing Higginson Highway. The member was unaware of trio’s activities as he was on his way to work. It is alleged the men were headed towards Mobeni Heights.
