Maritime graduates to start with Transnet

The first set of graduates have come through the ranks at the Transnet Maritime School of Excellence.

THE first group of graduates in maritime-related disciplines from Transnet’s Maritime School of Excellence were honoured with a ceremony on Wednesday, 9 April.

Hosted by Public Enterprises Minister, Malusi Gigaba and Transnet’s chairman of the board, Mafika Mkwanazi and group chief executive, Brian Molefe, the ceremony lauded the 38 cargo operators, 20 marine pilots, 17 helicopter pilots and seven engineers who graduated, most of whom will commence work at Transnet. This marks the first time Transnet has trained and employed its own aviation pilots. The helicopter pilots will fly marine pilots to the vessels, who will then guide vessels into port.

“Increasing access to training and skills development opportunities is an economic imperative for us. This we are doing by addressing inequities linked to gender and disability, skills shortage and the mismatch we are currently experiencing mainly due to apartheid education,” said Minister Gigaba.
