Ex-cop in the dock
Former cop charged with impersonating a police officer and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
A FORMER policeman was arrested and charged by the Montclair Crime Prevention Unit on Saturday, 3 May.
Montclair Crime Prevention officers stopped a green VW Golf with five men inside, at about 10pm in South Coast Road, opposite the Merebank train station. After stopping the vehicle, a passenger sitting in the front seat jumped out the vehicle and told officers he was a policeman.
Crime prevention officers searched the vehicle along with its occupants and no illegal items were found. On searching the fifth man, police found a gun strapped to his leg. He told police officers the gun was a private firearm and proceeded to produce his police card.
Unsatisfied with the his explanation, Montclair Crime Prevention officers took the man to the police station where they investigated further. The gun’s serial number was checked and it was discovered it did not belong to him. Further investigations revealed the man was not a police officer as he had resigned from the force.
He appeared in the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 5 May on charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and for impersonating a police officer. His case was postponed for further investigation and he remained in the custody of Montclair SAP. He re-appeared in court on Monday, 12 May.
“We believe he will be linked to cases of armed robbery as he impersonates a police officer. Montclair SAP management applauds the crime prevention unit for their diligence in carrying out the arrest as well as conducting thorough investigations,” said communications officer, Lt Leopold Jojozi.
