A COUPLE was robbed of R40,000 by a vagrant at the intersection of Blamey and South Coast roads on Friday, 9 May.
The couple, who had travelled from Newcastle to buy a car, had stopped at the robots at about 2.30pm when a vagrant approached them and started begging for money. He begged the woman, who was in the passenger seat. The woman, feeling sorry for him, decided to give him a few coins.
Unhappy with the amount he received, he started crying for more money. The woman reached for her handbag and began searching for more money. He saw an opportunity and snatched the handbag from her through the partially open window, before fleeing. No arrests have been made yet.
Later on the same day, a woman was robbed of her handbag containing personal belongings while walking at the same intersection. It is alleged one of the vagrants who direct traffic at the intersection when the robots are not working, pushed her, distracting her attention from the other vagrant, who made off with handbag.
