Spearfisherman drowns off Brighton Beach

A fisherman died late last night after drowning on the Bluff.

DESPITE more than 30 minutes of resuscitation attempts, a man died by drowning at Brighton Beach while spearfishing late in the afternoon on Sunday, 8 June.

The 36-year-old fisherman was rescued by local lifeguards, who immediately began CPR while waiting for paramedics to arrive. When Rescue Care paramedics arrived on the scene, they initiated advanced life support intervention and put the man on a manual ventilator. After 30 minutes of resuscitation, they felt a faint pulse, so he was immobilised on a specialised stretcher and transported to King Edward VIII Hospital.

According to Rescue Care operations director, Garrith Jamieson, the man succumbed to his injuries during the night.

Police are investigating the incident.
