Pupils say pride at root of pollution problem
Pupils tackle South Durban pollution problem.
PUPILS were asked to create innovate solutions to tackle pollution while they were hosted by the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (AMB) office from 8 to 12 June.
As part of the eThekwini Municipality economic development unit’s innovation summit at Moses Mabhida Stadium, a group of pupils toured the SDB and were given the opportunity to discuss ways of handling the pollution that plagues many residents.
“Our aim was to give the pupils an idea on what the SDB area entails, including its challenges from a social, economic and environmental point of view. The learners were then tasked to innovate a solution for that problem,” said SDB ABM manager, Eurakha Singh.
They came up with ideas on creating pride among residents, preventing street traders and visitors to the area from contributing to the problem and ways to reuse the waste. These were then presented at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 12 June.
“I was impressed with the visit to the SDB and have become motivated to be an environmental activist because we each have a role to play in protecting and saving our planet,” said one of the delegates, Jason Carelse.
