Eight years for retail store armed robbery
Stolen cellphones were used to the track the men, subsequently leading to their arrests.
AN armed robbery case which has taken eight years to resolve was successfully closed on Thursday, 5 June, after Montclair SAP ‘s W/O Roy Naidoo secured convictions for five armed robbers.
The men were responsible for an armed robbery at Montclair Mall’s Pick n Pay in October 2005. In a crime that shook the community, the men stormed the retail shop at 7.30am and locked the staff members in a room. They demanded the safe keys and proceeded to loot R300,000 from the safe. Adding more trauma to the staff, the men plundered them of their personal belongings, including cell phones and jewellery.
The stolen cellphones were used to track the men and they were arrested in Limpopo, Eastern Cape and the Transkei in January 2006. Their multiple bail applications were denied and they were kept in custody. On Thursday, 5 June, the men were convicted and sentenced to eight-years each in Durban regional court.
