Child trapped in drain pipe

An 11-year-old -girl was trapped in a drain pipe in the Izingolweni area on the south coast this afternoon at about 2pm.

Reports are that the children were playing around the pipes when she slipped buttock first down the pipe and got wedged in the narrow opening.

Port Shepstone sap search and rescue, Netcare 911 paramedics and the fire services received the frantic call and responded. When they arrived they found a severely distressed child trapped in the pipe. Unable to cut through it, they decided to put oil around her body and then gently pull to try and free her.

After about 45 minutes they managed to free her,  receiving a huge cheer from the crowd which had gathered. Paramedics examined the child and found she had sustained no injuries; she was then left with her parents with a cautioning to stay away from the open pipes.
