Public comment sought on city bus service

ETHEKWINI Municipality on Friday, 27 June began an initiative to solicit comments from members of the public and stakeholders on how the Durban Transport Bus Service should operate.

During a meeting in February, council agreed to investigate the possibility of providing the service externally, in terms of Section 76(b) of the Municipal Systems Act. This was followed by an intensive consultation process where three options were presented.

The first option was for the city to take over operations of the service; option two was for the establishment of an entity and the third option was to proceed with the privatisation of the service.

Option one was not preferred, as it would result in excess financial burden on taxpayers and would have subsequently led to the loss of the transport subsidy from provincial and national government.

Privatisation of the service did not meet the city’s required objectives.

In 2008, the municipality took ownership of the buses and the operations have been managed by Tansnat. Its current month-to-month contract with the municipality will continue until the city has established systems to ensure the smooth running of the service.
