Wanderers men take third spots in PNB singles
Andy Andraschko faced Stella Park’s Des Hean, and started his campaign poorly, dropping two fours in a row on the first two ends.
A RESPECTFUL number of Wanderers Bowling Club supporters made their way through to Amanzimtoti on Sunday morning to cheer for our two contenders in the Port Natal singles – Andy Andraschko in the open singles and Lofty Cawthorne in the senior singles.
In spite of blustery, cold weather, some very hot bowls was played. Andy Andraschko faced Stella Park’s Des Hean, and started his campaign poorly, dropping two fours in a row on the first two ends.
He fought back as bravely as he could, but Des was just too consistent and won comfortably in the end by 21-5. Lofty Cawthorne suffered a similar fate against veteran Sandy Miller in the senior singles, and lost his match by 21-8.
Lofty then played Ed Peters for the third spot and won this comfortably, thus finishing third in the men’s seniors event. There was no playoff for third/fourth in the men’s open singles, as Clinton Inglis – who had earlier lost to Graham Turner declined to play, conceding third spot to Andy. So in summary, men’s open placings went to Des Hean (Stella Park), Graham Turner (Westville BC), Andy (Wanderers) and Clinton Inglis (Westville BC). The men’s senior results were winner Sandy Miller (Westville CC), runner-up Ian Beswick (Lahee Park), third Lofty Cawthorne (Wanderers), fourth Ed Peters (Westville CC). For those who are interested, the womens’s open singles title went to Bluffs’ Bridget White who beat Durban’s Glenda Matthews 21-20 in a thrilling match.
Umhlali’s Belinda Steffens took third place, and Martie Marais finished fourth. In the women’s senior singles, Bluff won again when Daphne Reinhardt beat Parkhill’s Shirley Cohen with Toti’s Doreen Salmond finishing third and Durban’s Margaret van der Lingen finishing fourth.
In club competitions, the men’s open singles proceeded and the following results were recorded: First round Dave Faifer beat Mike Flack 21-12, Chris Pozyn got a walkover from Charles Bauristhene who didn’t show, Lofty Cawthorne beat Robbie Carr 21-10, Dennis Gericke beat Errol Pienaar 21-15, Graham Funnell beat Derek Stevens 21-13. In the second round Steve van Rooyen beat Dave Faifer 21-15, Ron Jackson beat Eric Smit 21-7, Shaun McAlister got a walkover from Chris Pozyn who didn’t pitch, Lofty Cawthorne beat Jimmy Neill 21-18, Clive Symons beat Neville Horner (score uncertain), Bob Hayward beat Dennis Gericke 21-18, Graham Funnell beat Russell Shepherd 21-4. Two quarter final matches were played Steve Van Rooyen beat Ron Jackson 21-7, and Shaun McAlister beat Chris Klopper 21-14.
In the women’s drawn fours final Joan Bruce, with Margie Kitchenbrand, Barbara Neill and Val McCaffrey were triumphant over Gerrie Jackson’s team of herself with Heather Beselaar, Cynthia Addinall and Chantal Hearnshaw who played in place of Anne Smit. The score was 32-10. The women’s competition secretary has requested that women scan the notice board regularly for updates. The next competition boarded is the women’s nominated pairs for the afternoon of 19 July.
The club commiserates with Jean Edley and Jumbo Nel. Jean will be returning to Westville Hospital for treatment to her intestinal cancer which has welled up again, and Jumbo broke his leg last Sunday when he tripped over a score board leg. Both are wished Godspeed and rapid recoveries.
By the time this report appears in print, the annual Dan Draper tournament will be in full swing at Wanderers. This runs all day from Monday to Friday, 7 to 11 July. Members are reminded of the limited parking, and are asked to utilise the parking on the tennis court or around the squash court area. The ‘regular as clockwork’ Cape’s Goodward Bowling Club members – whose team name is still Neville Paskins – in memory of their late skip – have arrived as they have done for many successive years – and are determined to do well this year. The club warmly welcomes them and their enthusiastic participation.
