Deadline looms for informal trading applications

eThekwini Municipality is urging those who want to apply for informal trader licenses to act fast as deadline looms.

THE Economic Development Directorate of eThekwini Municipality is calling on residents to apply for informal trading stalls and designated retail markets as the deadline looms on June 5.

This initiative, spanning several key trading hubs in various parts of Durban, including the Durban South, aims to expand access to affordable trading facilities, stimulate small business growth, and create jobs.

Residents may submit applications for a range of commercial spaces, including trading stalls, units and kiosks. Opportunities also extend to the management of storage facilities within the specific commercial zones.

Trading areas in the Durban South:

The Bluff:

  • Tara Road with five stalls.
  • The Bluff flea market (large) with 10 stalls.
  • The Bluff flea market (small) with 10 stalls.

Wema:

  • South Coast Road with five stalls.
  • SJ Smith hostel with five stalls.
  • Swinton Container Park with eight stalls.

Requirements for application 

The municipality said that applicants must meet a criteria before they are considered. 

  • Trading on a full-time basis 
  • Unemployed or not operating any other business elsewhere. 
  • Not in possession of any other trading stall within the eThekwini Municipality area.

 When applying the following are required: 

  • Type of trading activity/ product to be sold.
  • Certified copy of South African ID. Foreign Nationals must provide a valid work permit issued by the Department of Home Affairs.
  • State if you are living with a disability and provide supporting proof. 
  • Full residential address with proof of residence.
  • State your gender

Making the submission:

Applications should be directed and submitted to Southern area manager Sibusiso Masuku. The offices are located at 16 Inwabi Road, Isipingo. Alternatively contact Masuku on 031 902 2024 or 072 243 6067.

The deadline for the submission of applications is June 5 at precisely 12:00. 

The municipality also advised that applicants who do not receive a response within a two-month period following the application deadline should assume their submissions have not been successful.
