Motorists urged to be cautious
Construction on Bluff Road and Solomon Mahlangu Drive has caused commuters to become irate.

THE South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) urges motorists to be patient and mindful of traffic controllers along the Bluff Road and Solomon Mahlangu Drive (Edwin Swales VC) construction site, following a recent hit-and-run.
With traffic controllers directing traffic along Bluff Road, the traffic lights at the intersection of Doon Road are no longer in use. Irate drivers have become impatient with the traffic controllers and in one such incident, a man driving along Bluff Road towards the intersection refused to yield to the controllers and drove into another vehicle before speeding away.
Further consternation has crept in at the intersection of Bluff Road and Solomon Mahlangu Drive, where construction has reduced traffic to one lane. The construction was authorised as necessary by eThekwini Municipality after flooding caused overflows from storm water drains.
“We are replacing storm water lines due to the previous flooding in the rainy season and there is a need to upgrade in order to handle the excess water build-up to prevent further flooding,” said Shaun Venter, community liaison officer for the company charged with completing the project, Leomat Construction.
The project started in July and extends from Wentworth Station on Bluff Road to the traffic lights at the intersection of Old Mission Road and traffic disruptions are set to continue for some time.
