A RETIRED prison warder (65) convicted of raping an 11-year-old child at their home in Montclair was sentenced to 18 years for rape and seven years for sexual assault. Both sentences will run concurrently.

The rapist, whose name is withheld to protect the identity of the victim, appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court recently. The victim is the man’s step-granddaughter.

According to investigating officer Constable Phila Xulu of Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, the perpetrator started raping the victim from 2023.

“The accused is married to the victim’s grandmother. Police discovered that the accused lured the victim by offering her money and instructed her not to tell anyone that he was having a sexual relationship with her,” said Xulu.

In a statement read out in court, the victim said she would find her step-grandfather alone at home when she returned from school. She said he would then go to her room, sit beside her bed and touch her private part.

“He pleaded guilty on the charges and was remanded to serve his sentence at Westville Prison,” Xulu added.
